About Bugsy

First of all - the performing rights to Bugsy Malone are controlled by Boosey & Hawkes, (www.boosey.com) and you need to contact them to arrange permission for your show, payment of performing rights and hire of the score. The script you can buy from them or anywhere else.

The problem with Bugsy Malone is also the attraction ... it's VERY messy! When we came to put this on with the local Youth Theatre we quickly discovered that nobody really wants you to use their costumes because you absolutely cannot guarantee that they won't end up covered in splurge. So, we decided to invest in a few suits that could be splurged, washed and splurged again. We now have many suits ranging from a ladies size 18 to a suit small enough for a 10 year old. They are all washable. We also have trilbys.

The next set of costumes you'll need are for the showgirls .. well, they ARE showgirls! We have a variety of costumes for the more 'showy' moments. Shiny close fitting dresses with long black fringing for the opening number plus matching headbands, calf length dresses with boa necklines for the Tallulah number (Tallulah has a different dress) and black dresses for the finale (washable - they need to be!)

We also have a lot of 1920s style dresses for a range of other characters, including dresses suitable for Blousey.

The Hire

We can offer you a great package for your Bugsy Malone production. In our experience most schools and Youth Theatres opt for the package listed below, but you are welcome to hire just the guns or costumes if you wish. Please note we do not usually hire out single costumes (do ask though) and we never hire out for parties!
Check out THE COST

Take a look at 'splurge mayhem' in the final scene of Bugsy Malone at the Conquest Theatre in March 2009

- our guns deliver and our costumes can survive even this!!

Our costumes are designed with a cast of age range 10 - 14 in mind. However, the dresses and girls' suits will fit sizes 8 - 16 so will be fine for adults as well!. Lads' suits are age 10 - 15. We do offer a special price for the hire of guns and costumes together (see below)

Splurge Guns

We have 2 sets of 10 working guns and they come packed tightly in a box. Both sets also include the backfiring gun for Knuckles to 'self-splurge'.
Instructions are included! The guns are designed to work with cans of avalanche spray, not silly string, pie mix or any other substance you might come across in your mission to get messy.

The Cost

Cost of guns for 14 day hire (including delivery both ways and 30 cans of 'splurge') = £350 (+ deposit of £100, returnable)
Cost of costumes (no guns) for 14 day hire (including delivery both ways) = £350 (+ deposit of £150, returnable)

SPECIAL OFFER: Guns & Costumes, 14 days, splurge (30 cans), delivery both ways = £650 (+ deposit of £250 - returnable)

Contact us for a quote if you are reasonably local and would like to pick up the guns and costumes yourself

The hire period is 14 days from arriving with you to pick up after your show, which we will arrange with our couriers. We would ask you to do as much cleaning of costumes as possible before pick up if time permits. You should at least be able to sponge down any splurged costumes!

DEPOSITS are NOT BANKED and are returnable after we have received everything back in good condition. Should we need to carry out gun repairs or replace costumes we will advise you before banking your deposit cheque. We will then return the balance to you. We will not charge for splurge stains as this is expected! Please try to sponge everything off as soon as possible though.

We have 2 sets of guns/costumes and this is what you get delivered in 3 large boxes...
10 working splurge guns
1 backfiring splurge gun
5 shiny showgirl costumes with fringing & headbands

What splurge can do.....

Splurge is pretty evil stuff (but fun)! If left on costumes overnight it works its way into the fabric and stubbornly tries to stay put. So...we found the best way to get splurge off costumes, blacks or anything else, is to deal with it immediately. For that purpose we advise you to have people armed with water and sponges at the side of the stage and in the dressing rooms. Sponge the splurge off the costumes THE MINUTE THEY COME OFF STAGE! After the show you may need to clean more thoroughly - if you can have people doing this backstage throughout the show all the better (really you need have a laundry industry going on throughout the show - get lots of volunteers!) If you leave the splurge on overnight it will be very difficult to get off and may stain quite badly. We would be VERY grateful if you could look after these costumes. We will wash all the costumes ourselves, we only require you to sponge splurged costumes thoroughly before returning.

If you get splurge on the blacks sponge it off as soon as you can do so!
Ditto with the floor or set - close tabs in the interval and clean up - it gets very tacky. If Fizzy or Joe the Barman can clean up with mops & cloths and still stay in character you'll find it very useful!
